Dermal needling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat skin concerns by producing collagen. Loss of collagen is the number one cause of skin aging. This treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, enlarged pores, fines lines and wrinkles, reduced skin elasticity, uneven skin tone & it’s also used for anti-aging around the eyes and on sunspots.
WHY CHOOSE DERMAL NEEDLING?
From the age of about 20, we produce 1% less collagen a year each year, and this becomes visible at around age 30. Dermal needling works by encouraging your skin to produce more collagen, elastin and communicating factors, helping it to behave like younger skin. It does this by stimulating keratinocytes, melanocytes and fibroblast cells, and they release the growth factors that stimulate production of collagen and elastin. This will enable skin to be more even in tone and texture. Skin loses collagen with aging and injury, new collagen makes skin firmer and more supple and resilient.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?
Whilst you’re likely to see results after a couple of weeks, treating at 4 week intervals allows for maximum collagen deposition. However, skin improvement is likely to be at its peak at 6 months post it’s final treatment.
How is this achieved?
Prior to the procedure, a topical anaesthetic is applied to the skin to ensure the treatment is pain free. This takes approximately 20 minutes to work. Then a pen-like tool is used to create thousands of small pricks under the skin to rejuvenate the appearance. The pinpricks are so small that they are generally invisible in appearance.
Skin will appear red and sunburnt afterwards, but this fades quickly. Most people require little if any downtime. As the top layer of skin dies off you may have some dryness and sloughing of dead skin cells in the following days. Skin will be more sensitive to sun damage and sunscreen is important after treatment. Recovery is usually quite quick, with more radiant skin visible within a couple of weeks. Significant, long term improvement will require 3 treatments for anti aging, more for scar and stretch mark revision.

What Factors Can Accelerate Loss Of Collagen?
As well as aging, sun exposure, pollution and smoking drastically reduce collagen production. Poor diet choices, especially a diet high in sugars, processed meats, and simple carbohydrates activates the immune system and promotes inflammation, which also destroys collagen and ages the skin.
Microneedling vs Home Rollers
Home rollers may produce some temporary brightening of the skin. They are not made to significantly puncture the skin though, as it’s vital to use high quality needles which don’t bend, and which are used once only to avoid infection. Therefore they won’t address wrinkles, pore size, or stretch marks and scars.
Preparing For Treatment
Unless medically prescribed, it is recommended to stop using blood thinners (ibuprofen, alcohol) or topical retinoids for at least five days prior to the treatment.
Risks Of Side Effects?
As with most aesthetic treatments there is a small risk of side effects. The most common side effect is minor skin irritation immediately after treatment. Very rarely there may be some bruising, bleeding or even skin infection following treatment, although using sterile single use needles and avoiding touching the skin for 4 hours afterwards makes this extremely unusual.
