Diathermy – the perfect treatment for skin imperfections.
Diathermy is a medical/surgical technique of creating heat using high frequency electromagnetic current. This is a very safe technique for treating thread veins on the face, and for removing skin blemishes such as moles, cherry angiomas, skin tags and warts, with little or no scarring.
What can be treated with Diathermy?
- Skin Tags
- Thread Veins (Telangiectasia – on the face)
- Blood Spots (Campbell de Morgan spots)
- Sebaceous Hyperplasia
- Seborrhoeic Keratosis
- Small Xanthelasma
What does Diathermy treatment involve?
This will vary depending on the specific blemish or lesion being removed, but mostly the treatment involves the application of a mild diathermy electrical current into the affected area. The blemish will either be removed straight away or may take a few days to shrink away. In some cases, a topical anaesthetic cream or small injection to numb the area may be used if necessary.
How long does Diathermy treatment take?
You will initially have a full consultation to include a medical questionnaire, and a thorough examination of the blemish to ensure that it is safe to be removed. Once this has been completed the actual treatment generally takes no more than 30 minutes.
If there is any suspicion that the blemish needs further examination, then you will be asked to see your own GP.
How long will the effects of Diathermy last?
Most blemishes, once treated will not return. However, there is always a risk that the blemish will re-grow, or others may appear in the same area. If this is the case, repeat treatments may be required.
